Anyone whose role may involve communicating with vulnerable and intimidated witnesses in accordance with S16 and S17 of the Youth Justice & Criminal Evidence Act 1999, In particular:
- Police (including Special Constabulary and Police Community Support Officers)

- HM Revenue and Customs staff
- Independent Office of Police Complaints staff
- Insolvency Service
- Local authority adult & children’s services

On the 3 and 5 day course, participants will
- Understand who vulnerable and intimidated witnesses are, and what special measures are available to these witnesses.
- Appreciate the importance of planning for a vulnerable or intimidated witness and how the completion of an interview plan can assist with an interview and show the professionalism and integrity of the interview process to others in the legal process.
- Understand the importance of the rapport phase of an interview and how to balance the need for rapport with the interests and needs of court proceedings.
- Understand how to structure their interviewing to take account of the need to prove the necessary elements of a criminal offence
- Demonstrate an understanding of the constituent parts of the cognitive interview and how this interacts with current court trends and expectations
The 5 day course will enable participants
- To display how to lead an ABE interview with a vulnerable witness.
What does the training mean for your business or organisation?
Employees who have attended the three day training will be able to understand the principles of an ABE interview and will be able to assist a lead interviewer in a co-interviewing role. Employees who have attended the five day course will be able to lead an ABE interview. The training will be underpinned by the practical experience of the trainer and recent and relevant academic research in this field.
What does the training cost and where is it held?
Costs will be provided on request. Training will normally be provided at a venue of your choice with up to a maximum of 10 participants.
